The History Of The Intercontinental Championship

3 Disc DVD

Review By Paps for wrestle-zone.co.uk

The Intercontinental Championship traces it’s rich and storied history back to the 1970’s and has been held by current and future WWE Hall Of Fame Superstars. The Illustrious list includes The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Ultimate Warrior, Bret ‘Hit Man’ Hart, Mr Perfect, Eddie Guerrero, Edge, Randy Savage, Ricky ‘the Dragon’ Steamboat and many more.

Following a summer of enthusiastic voting by WWE fans for their favourite matches from each decade, the most popular choices have been collected on this fan-pleasing triple DVD set.

From the match between Pat Patterson and Ted DiBiase that started it all to The Fiery Latino and Olympic Strongman slugfest of 1980, the classic WrestleMania III pairing of Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage Vs. Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat and the modern era Jeff Hardy matches against Umaga and Chris Jericho in 2008, it’s all here in one collection as chosen by the fans!

The History Of the Intercontinental Championship will be available at all good stores prices 29.99 from 26th January 2009 or can be ordered directly from SILVERVISION , the UK’s official WWE DVD website.

Disc one of this long & extremly good three disc DVD takes us way back to 1979 and Pat Patterson vs. Ted DiBiase. I was 6 years old at that time and the only wrestling I’d ever heard of consisted of two big huge sweaty men called Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks that I would watch with my Grannie! I have to admit that disc 1 didn’t really grab my attention, but I am 99% certain that it will be fantastic for anyone who was watching wrestling back in the 80’s!
Discs 2 and 3 however are right up my street! These are fantastic and definatly something I will be watching over and over again!
Classic matches such as Bret Hart Vs British Bulldog at Summerslam in England, just watching Davey Boy’s entrance gave me goosebumps as he took the home crowd to another level with boxing legend Lennox Lewis flying the flag for him! There is also Austin Vs Rocky Miavia with the Nation. Awesome to see that Miavia was just beginning to morph into ‘The Rock’ character! And of course the disc could not have gone to press without the now notorious ladder match between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon at Wrestlemania in 1994 to unify the two IC title betls! It’s a match I have seen on countless occasions now, even though I wasn’t watching back in 1994, it’s definately a well-covered match over the last ten years, yet I never get tired of seeing it.
Seeing Jeff Jarrett sporting the long hair and spandex vs. Razor Ramon is a far cry from the Jarrett we see today but he comes back onto the DVD in a now historic match against Chyna in 1999 at No Mercy! It’s great to see Chyna go toe to toe with the guys, I was always a fan until she was no longer wrestling of course! The funniest part of the match was when Jarrett sold a smack to back from a stick of Salami! There’s a toilet seat, tongs that are used in a way that will make any man’s eyes water; and even a fish used in this match and Male vs Female in this ‘hardcore’ type of a match especially, is just something that you wouldn’t see on today’s WWE programming! (And Teddy Long in his previous life as a referee!) If you haven’t seen it before you need to see it now!
Disc three is equally as good with amazing matches from Orton, Edge, Ric Flair, Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho. Triple H and more!
There as so many great matches on this three disc set and defiantly one that any wrestling fan should have in their collection! I will most certainly be watching this one again!
