Sorting Out The Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho

I thought Id forgo my usual SD review and instead, pass along my thoughts on the match-up that had everyone buzzing last Friday night.

And I should probably start with this.there is NOTHING wrong with having a match like this on so called free TV. (I have a cable bill that definitely says nothing is free.) Think of the numbers. Millions of people tune in to RAW and Smackdown every week. Compare that to the 200,000 or so that might purchase a PPV any given month. How is it wrong to reward the loyal weekly viewers by giving them an honest to goodness wrestling match? Not a heart to heart. Not another pointless contract signing. But two of the top stars of the past decade finally going head to head?

The way some people were carrying on with their forced outrage, I half expected to hear of thousands of fans sending Vince a check just to make up for this injustice.

But heres a thought. Why not give this match away? Why not make the casual fan remember the days when top matches like this were the norm? Why not make the folks who didnt tune in regret it? What better way to make them watch again by showing them what they might be missing?

Now Taker isnt what he used to be. And this match-up might have been better done five or six years ago. But it was still great wrestling theater and both men brought their A game. I loved the clever counters they both used, in particular Jerichos move to bring Taker down from his attempt at the old school rope walk and Takers reversal of The Walls into the Devils Triangle. It was two crafty veterans who used every trick they had to outsmart the other. In the end, Taker was just one short step ahead. And for now, thats as it should be.

I know there was a lot of talk about the crowd being too quiet. But it should be pointed out that they had already seen nearly four hours of wrestling up to that point. Even the most diehard fan would have been a bit burned out. And to be honest, I was too caught up in the action to worry about the audience.

So instead of shaking my head in bewilderment at the WWE offering such a match without asking for fifty bucks in exchange, Id like to thank them. And believe me, I dont do that much these days. They didnt give us a bait and switch. We got an all out, bell to bell match. Yeah, Big Show and Kane made appearances. But they didnt take away from the action and thats what matters here.

So.does this mean well never see another Jericho-Taker match? I doubt it. One scathing promo by Jericho and this is on again. It really isnt all that complicated.
