Review By Paps for wrestle-zone UK

For close to two decades, it was the signature event first in NWA, then WCW. Some of the greatest Superstars in wrestling history had defining moments at Starrcade. It may be gone, but fans of sports entertainment continue to celebrate its rich tradition and lasting legacy. Now, for the first time on DVD, the greatest matches of Starrcade are collected in a 3-disc set, along with a new and exclusive documentary exploring the 18-year history of the event, including comments from Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Magnum TA, Road Warrior Animal, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, David Crockett, and others. The featured matches, as voted by the WWE Universe, are counted down by some of the key players from the time.

Starrcade was a WCW/NWA event that ran from 1983 through to 2000. This three-disc DVD features on disc one, around an hours worth of documentary about the history of this event, it’s very well done and a lot of fun and features many of the stars that were around in that era of wrestling including Dusty Rhodes, Road Warrior Animal & Ric Flair. Starrcade was said to be WrestleMania in the making and it also created the birth of the Survivor Series pay per view event. Discs two and three feature the best matches from Sarrcade’s history and what makes this unique is that these matches were voted for by the fans through wwe.com.

I have to admit to be drawn to the more recent matches in histoy on this DVD rather than the older ones. Matches such as 3 Count vs Evan Karagias and Jung Dragons from December 2000 was fantastic to watch for example, but I did also enjoy Barry Windham & Brian Pillman vs. Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas from
Starrcade December 28, 1992, Sting vs Ric Flair from 1989 is definatly one you should see & you can have a little chuckle at Dustin Rhodes vs. Stunning Steve Austin from December 1993!

Having never been a WCW fan it is great to be able to catch up on a little bit of wrestling history! This event ran through the NWA and survived it’s transition to WCW, for a total of 18 years!

The only extras are commentaries with Todd Grisham and Road Warrior Animal, which are interesting and a lot of fun to listen to.

It’s another long release DVD that you will have to watch in stages to get to the end. Many hours of footage and a great documentary-style disc one giving us insight into what we’re about to watch on discs two and three. Im not sure that I would have bought this one myself, being that I’ve only been a wrestling fan for 9 years I found some of it a bit drawn out, but if you’re a long time fan it is a definate MUST HAVE for your collection! If you’re a newer fan like myself, then it is worth a look if you’re interested in the history of the business.
