Hulk Hogan new DVD Review

February 3, 2010   ·   0 Comments

While the immortal Hulk Hogan was spending last month “giving the young guys chance to shine” – guys like Knobbs, Sags, Hall and Morley – SilverVision and WWE were releasing Hulk Hogan’s Unreleased Collector’s Series. This DVD includes previously unreleased matches from the 80s, 90s and the last decade. It includes his pre-Hulkamania career, his then WWF pomp, his early WCW fan favourite days, the infmaous nWo era and finally touches on Hogan’s return to red & yellow in the WWE.

If it’s not already obvious, this collection is best suited to Hogan fans or old school entuhsiasts. Anyone expecting to see an Angle/Styles type match or a Rey/Shawn pacy encounter will not be suited but fans who grew up watching 80s WWF or 90s WCW will no doubt be in their element with this collection.

The appeal for most fans will be the fact that none of these matches have been released before – the Sting match from Nitro in 1995 for example – has never been shown anywhere since that night’s episode nearly 15 years ago. While these are previously unreleased matches, a lot of them are from famous feuds. While it doesn’t show their Mania matches, for example, Hogan’s feuds with Sgt. Slaughter and Randy Savage are showcased in this collection with previously unreleased matches being included on the DVD.

The list of opponents is impressive; the aforementioned Slaughter and Savage are joined by Kamala, One Man Gang, Rick Rude, Ted Dibiase & Virgil, Big Boss Man and Earthquake…and that’s just from the WWF Hulkamania era footage. Later WWE matches with Kurt Angle, Triple H and Ric Flair are included while the WCW footage includes matches with Bret Hart, Vader, Sting and The Giant (aka Big Show). Early footage includes an excellent match with then WWF Champion Bob Backlund and an early encounter with Andre the Giant, both from 1980.

The footage stretches nearly 9 hours long across three disks and varies from early reputation building matches to predictable Hogan style matches up to the legacy cementing highlights from his last major WWE run in 2002. The extras are a selection of promos through the 80s, 90s and up to his brief partnership with Shawn Michaels and the main DVD ends with the nice touch of briefly showing Hogan’s induction into the Hall of Fame. Although only a fleeting piece of footage, it shows the legacy this man created for himself. While many modern fans look more to the modern day warriors, Hogan’s contribution in making the wrestling business – sorry, sports entertainment – the popular industry it became cannot be underestimated.

Hulk Hogan’s Unreleased Collector’s Series was released on 25th January 2010 and is available from SilverVision on the link below. RRP is 29.99 but the DVD is currently available for only 17.99
