Optimus Fighting Championship Results (18/04/10) Newcastle, UK

Metro Arena
Newcastle, England

The star attraction for this show was to be a clash between UFC legend Dan ‘The Beast’ Severn and rising UK heavyweight Darren Towler. Mother Nature was to be the winner on this occasion though as Severn was unable to get in to the UK due to the volcanic ash that has caused minor chaos of late. UFC veteran Ian ‘The Machine’ Freeman was lined up to be the MC but he too was stuck in another country!  As they say, the show must go on, and it certainly did.

For a first time show, many felt it was a huge risk for the promoter putting Optimus FC on at the 11,000 capacity Newcastle Arena (the first live MMA show at the venue since UFC 80) Most domestic shows are born at the local social club or town hall. The crowd remained in good spirits, and the action was non stop through out the night with not one fight going the distance!

With Severn Vs Towler off, it was left to welterweights Rob Mills and Ryan Copland to put on a main event. Mills coming off 4-fight winning streak was the favoured fighter, and showed this by wiping out Copland in only 32 seconds of the first round. Setting himself up with some leg kicks, Mills landed a thundering left hook to rock Copland which saw him back up to the cage. Many expected Mills to unload for the TKO but he chose to pull the dazed Copland, who was trying his best to get hold of Mills, into a guillotine, for a submission finish. Copland is a game fighter who will now go back to the drawing board. With 5 wins in a row. Mills will feel confident about his chances against a big name, or someone with a similar record.

Another fighter who almost stole the show at the beginning of the night was welterweight Paul Cook. Cook took out BJJ black belt Dave ‘Speedie’ Elliot in only 12 seconds of the first round. Cook knew what he was going to do before the bell rang, which was take away any ideas Elliot had of taking it to the floor. A good victory for Cook.

The open weight tournament packed a lot of punch, and I mean a lot! A selection of big men came out swinging in pretty much every fight to try and get the glory. Stand out bouts from the tournament was Micky Burns Vs Kenny Dugay, a back and forth brawl that only ended just before the end of the first when Burns landed to big right hands to fell the extremely tough Dugay. Steve Lomas must of knew he was in for a tough night when he was drawn against the much bigger Andy Hillhouse. Scottish fighter Hillhouse spent the first round throwing Lomas around the mat, imposing his massive size difference at will. Lomas has the heart of a warrior though and would not give up, taking advantage of Hillhouse’s empty gas tank for the GnP finish.
