UFC 144: Edgar vs Henderson Report

INTRODUCTION:

We are live at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan!

Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan are of course on the mic tonight as we go to the octagon for our first fight.

FACEBOOK.COM PRELIMINARY MATCHES

Featherweight bout: Tiequan Zhang (146lbs 18-2) vs. Issei Tamura (145lbs 16-2)

ROUND ONE: Both come flicking the jab, trying to close the distance. Zhang smacks Tamura and nearly KO’s him. Tamura tags him back and really nearly KO’d Zhang! Tamura is on top off Zhang trying to finish the fight. Zhang gets his wits about him and pushes Tamura into guard. Tamura is pounding on Zhang. Tamura gets to half guard and grinds his elbow into Zhang’s face. Dean stands them up. Tamura shoots for a takedown. He gets Zhang down but sticks his head a guillotine. Tamura defends and gets his head free. Tamura is in full guard. Zhang is working from the bottom but he’s not able to get much going. This round was almost almost all Tamura all the time.

SCORECARD: Tamura 10-9

ROUND TWO: Zhang starts with a leg kick. The fighters trade punches. Tamura then promptly KO’s Zhang with a right hook that came in on the shinkansen…well, I didn’t call this one right at all.

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Issei Tamura by KO at 0:32 of round 2.

Japan won the fight but now China will win the war…film at 11:00.

Bantamweight bout: Takeya Mizugaki (135lbs 15-6-2) vs. Chris Cariaso (136lbs 12-3)

ROUND ONE: Cariaso starts of with a punch-kick combo and backs Mizugaki up. Mizugaki responds with a combo of his own. They clinch and Cariaso lands a few hard shots. Mizugaki is using some good boxing footwork to float in and out of the pocket. Mizugaki fails a takedown attempt. Mizugaki lands a few more shots but Cariaso snatches him and takes him down. Mizugaki turns him over and attacks from guard. Cariaso nearly gets off an omaplata. Mizugaki defends and gets back to guard. Mizugaki breaks free from Cariaso’s grip and smashes him. Cariaso lands some short elbows from the bottom. Mizugaki remains active until the horn sounds.

SCORECARD: Mizugaki 10-9

ROUND TWO: Mizugaki and Cariaso trade punches. Mizugaki ties him and presses him against the cage. Mizugaki backs away from him. Cariaso goes for a head kick that lands under the armpit. He lands a short hook. Mizugaki is now having some difficulty landing on the elusive Cariaso. He presses Cariaso against the fence. Cariaso reverses. Mizugaki defends and trips him down. Mizugaki briefly has half guard but now he’s back to full guard. He postures up and lays in some ground and pound on Cariaso. Cariaso goes for what Rogan calls 100% and gets it but Mizugaki gets out of Dodge lickety split. Cariaso comes forward, clinches and delivers an elbow as the horn sounds.

SCORECARD: Mizugaki 10-9

ROUND THREE: Cariaso lands a head kick. Mizugaki clinches against the cage. They trade knees in the clinch. Cariaso reverses. Mizugaki gets free. Cariaso eats a straight right as he rushes in and presses Mizugaki against the fence. They break up as Cariaso tries another head kick. He falls over and Mizugaki presses his advantage. Mizugaki works from full guard. Mizugaki continues to grind his way toward a possible victory. Mizugaki tries to pass the guard. He almost passes but Cariaso is defending well. They stand up for a brief moment before time expires.

SCORECARD: Mizugaki 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Takeya Mizugaki Chris Cariaso by unanimous decision (29-28X3).

How in the world did they come up with that decision? Seriously someone clue me in.

Middleweight bout: Riki Fukuda (185lbs 17-5) vs. Steve Cantwell (185lbs 7-5)

ROUND ONE: Cantwell throws a kick and is immediately taken down. Fukuda works some ground and pound. Fukuda gets his arm free and hammers him with elbows. Fukuda is pounding on Cantwell. Cantwell gets back to his feet and stays clinched up with Fukuda. Fukuda breaks away. Cantwell lands a leg kick. They trade head strikes. Fukuda’s takedown attempt is stuffed. Fukuda tries again and is stopped, rather forcefully. Fukuda is turning up the heat, landing more strikes. Cantwell tries a superman punch. Cantwell returns fire to end the round.

SCORECARD: Fukuda 10-9

ROUND TWO: Both men trade leg kicks. Fukuda gets a takedown but sticks his head in the guillotine. Cantwell has it tight but Fukuda defends and gets free. Both men are standing again. Cantwell clinches and delivers knees. Fukuda lands a few uppercuts. Cantwell lands a hook. Rukuda returns fire with a hook. Fukuda comes forward throwing leather the whole way. Cantwell clinches to save himself. Cantwell goes for an elbow and then a spinning elbow. Fukuda is still swarming him with punches. They are going punch for punch. Cantwell is trying to land something but Fukuda is defending. Fukuda is still doing damage. Uh oh, Fukuda produces our first nut shot of the night (Kong, don’t get any ideas). Cantwell gets a takedown and attempts to take his back. Not happening.

SCORECARD: Fukuda 10-9

ROUND THREE: Fukuda comes out swinging. Fukuda attacks the lead leg of Cantwell. Fukuda continues to use his boxing to control this fight. Fukuda attempts a double and gets it. Cantwell attacks the arm of Fukuda. Fukuda defends. Cantwell gives up his back. Fukuda gets to side control. Cantwell escapes. Fukuda resumes kicks Cantwell in the lead leg. Fukuda is throwing a lot of strikes. Cantwell is defending but is not fighting back. Fukuda delivers a few more kicks to end the round.

SCORECARD: Fukuda 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Riki Fukuda by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27X2).

Bantamweight bout: Norifumi Yamamoto (136lbs 18-5-0, 1NC) vs. Vaughan Lee (135lbs 11-7-1)

ROUND ONE: Both men are tentative to start, not throwing much. Kid finally gets off first. Lee connects with the power left. Yamamoto is doing lots of feints. Lee eats a hook but tries for a takedown. Kid stays on his feet. WHAMMO! Kid smacks Lee. He keeps up the pressure but Lee keeps this going. Lee eats a hook while delivering a hard knee. Yamamoto is a bit shook up. Kid lands a pair of strikes. Lee hits him back. Yamamoto tries for a takedown to recover and gets himself caught in a triangle! Holy Molely! Lee just tapped out Kid Yamamoto with an armbar! Poor Japan, first the tsunami, now this. : (

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Vaughan Lee by submission (armbar) at 4:29 of round 1.

Lightweight bout: Takanori Gomi (155lbs 32-8-0, 1NC) vs. Eiji Mitsuoka (154lbs 18-7-2)

ROUND ONE: Gomi tries to find the distance and set up his power punch. Mitsuoka tries and fails at a takedown attempt. Mitsuoka lands a series of strikes. He tries for an ankle pick. Gomi lands a pair of knees. Gomi continues to look for the KO. Mitsuoka and Gomi exchange strikes to the face. Gomi lands a kick to the body. Mitsuoka and Gomi continue to exchange until Gomi gets dropped. Mitsuoka goes to the ground and locks up a mounted triangle. Gomi survives to the second round.

SCORECARD: Mitsuoka 10-9

ROUND TWO: Gomi comes out very aggressively in this round. He lights up Mitsuoka until he’s taken down. He gets to his feet and resumes punching Mitsuoka about the face. Mitsuoka dives for a takedown but i sprawled on. Gomi rides Mitsuoka a la Bock Lesnar and finishes him off about the same way. Hammerfistapalooza!

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Takanori Gomi by TKO (strikes) at 2:21 of round 2.

Lightweight bout: Anthony Pettis (155lbs 12-2) vs. Joe Lauzon (156lbs 20-6)

ROUND ONE: Pettis lands body kick. Lauzon comes forward with a series of strikes. He chases him down again. Pettis comes forward with strikes. Lauzon chases, Pettis circles away. Pettis serves Joe Lauzon a plate of shin and down he goes. BLAM, head kick, goodnight baby!

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Anthony Pettis by KO at 1:21 of round 1.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…the rematch between Showtime and Smooth will be GLORIOUS!

Featherweight bout: Hatsu Hioki (145lbs 25-4-2) vs. Bart Palaszewski (146lbs 34-13)

ROUND ONE: Hioki lands a jab, a kick and then drops Bartimus. Bart gets to his feet. Hioki is lighting Bart up. Bart tries to retaliate but Hioki ducks, grabs his leg and takes him down. Bart tries for a guillotine. He gets his head free and gets into side control. Hioki traps Barts arm and delivers a series of unblocked head punches. This one is in danger of being stopped. Bart gives up his back. Hioki gets an armbar! Bart powers out! Hioki keeps up the pressure and lands in Barts full guard. Hioki is punishing Bart with strikes from guard. Bart survives but barely.

SCORECARD: Hioki 10-9

ROUND TWO: Hioki starts with a series of kicks to the legs and body. Bart finally gets a right hand through. Bart lands a leg kick. Hioki lands a head kick. Hioki lands a jab. Bart starts to find his groove, landing a series of combinations. Hioki misses the head kick. Bart lands a few shots to the body. They trade kicks and Bart takes one in the junk. Bart is picking up the pace, looking for the KO. Hioki plants a few kicks in the body. Hioki goes for a takedown and ends the round on his back.

SCORECARD: Palaszewski 10-9

ROUND THREE: Hioki immediately tries for a takedown and after a moment, gets it. Hioki is in what Rogan calls an “empty half.” Hioki moves to side control. Hioki is trying to pass into mount. Hioki almost has a crucifix. He pounds on Barts face. He drives his knees into the body. Bart gives up his back. He’s trying for a rear-naked choke but Bart is defending. Hioki is controlling Bart. He softens up his torso. Hioko pulls Bart back and continues looking for a submission. Hioki can’t finish the fight but he certainly looks like he won it.

SCORECARD: Hioki 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Hatsu Hioki by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28X2).

Middleweight bout: Yushin Okami (185lbs 27-6) vs. Tim Boetsch (186lbs 14-4)

ROUND ONE: Boetsch lands a leg kick. Boetsch goes head hunting. Okami hits back with a straight left. Okami scores with a hard jab. Okami nails him with the jab again. Boetsch scores with a right. Boetsch has been cut by the jab of Okami. Okami is lighting Boetsch up. Okami hits a head kick. Boetsch attacks the lead leg. Okami lands a leg kick. They continue to trade until the end of the round, with Okami having the advantage.

SCORECARD: Okami 10-9

ROUND TWO: Okami continues the effective use of boxing technique. He lands a knee to the body. They clinch against the fence. Okami is trying to get Boetsch down. Like many others before him tonight, he gets him down by sticking his head into a guillotine. Okami gets his head free. Okami looks to pass the guard from the half guard position. Okami is trying for an arm triangle. Okami gets full mount and proceeds to “Tito Ortiz” Tim Boetsch. Boetsch moves him back to full guard as the horn blows.

SCORECARD: Okami 10-9

ROUND THREE: Boetsch comes out looking to end this right quick. He’s pounding away on Okami, He’s landing kicks! Boetsch holds Okami’s head in place and damn near kills him with uppercuts. Okami is on spaghetti legs! BAM! Matt Hume said go finish him and Tim Boetsch followed orders to a tee. WOW!

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Tim Boetsch by TKO at 0:54 of round 3.

Welterweight bout: Yoshihiro Akiyama (169lbs 13-4-0, 2NC) vs. Jake Shields (170lbs 26-6-1)

ROUND ONE: Yoshihiro demands to be referred to only as Sexyama…you got it boss! Shields goes to work on the lead leg of Sexyama. He tries for a takedown but is denied. Shields for a single leg. Sexyama leans on the cage for support. Sexyama reverses and puts Shields against the fence. He breaks away, avoiding Shields punches. Shields resumes kicking Sexyama in the leg. He lands a few in the body. Sexyama lands an uppercut. Shields dives at Sexyama. They are clinched against the fence. Shields tries to get his back while standing. Sexyama spins out and loses his mouthpiece. Shields keeps up the attack. Sexyama takes Shields down but Shields jumps right back up. Shields lands one on the chin.

SCORECARD: Shields 10-9

ROUND TWO: Shields tries for a takedown and is stuffed. He tries again and gets nada. Sexyama lands a spinning back fist. Shields tries another takedown but Sexyama is stopping him every time. Kick to the body from Shields. Sexyama tries for a takedown, not happening. The jab has been effective enough for Shields tonight as he’s kept Akiyama at bay. Akiyama lands a hard leg kick. Akiyama throws Shields down but Shields is up and grabbing Akiyama’s leg. He moves to Akiyama’s back.

SCORECARD: Shields 10-9

ROUND THREE: Shields is picking up the pace with his strikes. He tries again to get that elusive takedown. The fighters are clinched against the fence. Shields staggers Akiyama with a kick to the body. Shields shoots for a double. He presses Akiyama agains the fence. Akiyama reverses. The ref breaks them up. Shields tackles Akiyama and gets his back. Shields is working for the rear-naked choke.

SCORECARD: Shields 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Jake Shields by unanimous decision (30-27X3).

That went exactly as I thought it would. That’s not a good thing.

Heavyweight bout: Cheick Kongo (229lbs 27-6-2) vs. Mark Hunt (264lbs 7-7)

ROUND ONE: Hunt (the kick boxer) kicks Kongo and falls over. Kongo presses forward. Hunt defends and breaks away. Kongo lands a pair of kicks. Hunt is trying to land his overhand right. Hunt is trying to find a home for his left hook. He misses a few times but finally lands one and drops Kongo. Hunt nails Kongo. Kongo tries to retreat but Hunt stays on him and BOOM goes the dynamite. That’s all folks. Short and inoffensive. Thank you Mark Hunt, the 1st Round Finish Club salutes you!

ROUND ONE: Rampage ducks Bader’s punches and tries for a takedown. He presses him against the fence. Bader turns him around. They exchange knees in the clinch. Rampage gets free. Bader tries a superman punch. Bader throws an overhand right. Bader lands a leg kick. Bader lands an overhand right and then throws Rampage into the fence. Bader knees Rampage in the thigh. Bader releases him. Bader keeps flicking his punches out there and then clinches with Rampage again. Rampage fails a takedown. Bader knees him. Rampage gets away. Rampage lands a hook.

SCORECARD: Bader 10-9

ROUND TWO: Rampage looks for the KO early in this round. The fighters clinch against the fence again. Rampage has the advantage. HOLY SMOKE!!! Rampage just slammed Bader on his head! Bader gets to his feet and kicked in the body. Rampage hooks to the body and then gets taken down. Bader is in half guard, throwing elbows. The Japanese fans are booing Bader…yikes. Bader is all over Rampage. Rampage looks very tired. Rampage gets to his feet. Bader gut wrenches Rampage down to the mat. Bader takes his back. Rampage tries to stand, can’t do it and Bader lands in Rampages guard.

SCORECARD: Bader 10-9

ROUND THREE: The clinch again and Bader is in control. Rampage eats a left as he breaks away. Rampage tries a takedown and gets nothing. Rampage can’t land his hook. Bader tackles Rampage and lands in side control. Bader is all grind in this round. Rampage can’t get away. Bader is pounding on Rampage from the guard. Bader is just busy enough to control Rampage and not get stood up. He’s cruising to a decision victory. Bader tries for a kimura. With seconds to go he tries for a guillotine.

SCORECARD: Bader 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Ryan Bader by unanimous decision (30-27X3) .

That may have been more painful to watch then Shields vs Akiyama…yeesh.

Lightweight Championship bout: Champ Frankie Edgar (154lbs 14-1-1) vs. Benson Henderson (154lbs 15-2)

ROUND ONE: Both fighters paw at one another. Edgar hits an inside leg kick. Henderson kicks, Edgar catches his foot and Henderson tries to take his head off with the other foot. Henderson lands a kick, and the next one is caught. Another kick and another catch. Henderson tries a superman punch and follows with a kick to Edgar’s crotch. Henderson keeps kicking and Edgar keeps catching it. Edgar lands two strikes on Henderson. Henderson lands a left. Edgar gets a takedown. Henderson gets back up. Edgar misses a spinning back fist. There’s a few more clashes to end the round.

SCORECARD: Edgar 10-9

ROUND TWO: Henderson kicks, Edgar catches and delivers two kicks of his own. Edgar throw two kicks out there that Henderson shrugs off. They go punch for punch for a spell. They clinch up and Henderson knees him in the face. Henderson kicks Edgar in the body. Henderson hits a switch kick. Edgar throws Henderson down. Edgar tries for a guillotine and then transitions to the back. Henderson escapes. Edgar gets a takedown after a series of strikes traded between them. Edgar ground and pounds from guard. Henderson up kicks Edgar and nearly knocks him out. Edgar’s nose may be broke!

SCORECARD: Edgar 10-9

ROUND THREE: Edgar kicks to the body. Edgar is fast and elusive. He’s still able to hit Henderson. Henderson is having some difficulty finding his target. Henderson knees Edgar in the body. Edgar kicks him back. Henderson dives on Edgar mid strike. Edgar tries to get away but Henderson is all over him. He escapes but takes a kick on the way out. Edgar is scoring on Henderson. They trade kicks. Both fighters try to take each other down. Henderson hits a head kick. Edgar takes Henderson down. Henderson hits an elbow from the bottom to end the round.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-9

ROUND FOUR: Edgar with a leg kick. Henderson hits a double jab. Henderson kicks Edgar in the body. Henderson kicks Edgar in the crotch. Henderson is jabbing away at Edgar. Edgar lands a straight right. Edgar lands another right. Edgar gets a takedown and guess where his is…right in the guillotine. Edgar gets his head free. Henderson stands up and Edgar tries to take his back. Henderson tries a standing kimura and Edgar lets him go. Edgar takes some punishment attempting a takedown. Edgar launches another flurry as the round ends.

SCORECARD: Edgar 10-9

ROUND FIVE: Edgar catches Henderson’s kick again. Henderson lands a right. Edgar lands a hard right. Edgar lands another good right. Edgar takes him down and tries for his back. Edgar retreats from the standing kimura. Henderson smacks Edgar. Henderson kicks, Edgar catches and slips. Henderson can’t use it to his advantage. Edgar drops Henderson. Henderson gets to his feet and out of immediate danger. Henderson launches a head kick. Edgar tries for a takedown and settles for kicking him. Henderson lands a vicious knee and tries for a last ditch submission to end the fight.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER AND NEW LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION – Benson “Smooth” Henderson by unanimous decision (49-46X2, 48-47).
