Newsflash

The PPV numbers are in for WrestleMania 24, and they are considerably lower than wwe and Floyd Mayweather expected. WrestleMania 24 drew 1,058,000 buys which works out to $23.8 million. This is less than last year’s 1,200,000 buys and $24.4 million for WrestleMania 23. The numbers were released this morning with WWE’s first quarter earnings report, which had the company listed as pulling in $19.5 million in net earnings over the first quarter of 2008.

HAVING been more of a Raw man over the last couple of years, this week I made my way up the motorway to check out my first slice of Smackdown action in more than 24 months.

The Birmingham NEC was jam packed to the rafters for this show, and WWE didn't disappoint as Smackdown general manager Theodore Long announced the first rematch between Edge and The Undertaker since WrestleMania, CM Punk v Chavo Guerrero and Finlay v The Great Khali.

The first half of the event, as with most non-televised events, was instantly forgettable with John Morrison and The Miz v Shannon Moore and Jimmy Wang Yang, Kofi Kingtson v Shelton Benjamin and Tommy Dreamer v Mark Henry doing little to warm up the crowd.

It was the match before intermission which really started the night off for us with the ultimate six man pairing of Batista, Big Show and Matt Hardy going against MVP and Edge's two cronies Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder.

MVP was hilarious on the mic as he tried to sell some old technology he had brought over from the States that he thought had never been used over her before - a toothbrush and toothpaste.

The laughs didn't last for long though as Big Show, Batista and Matt Hardy destroyed his team.

After the intermission we were entertained by Finlay v The Great Khali. Finlay, as Hornswoggle got some of the biggest cheers as he helped his father to a surprise win against the giant who looks bigger in real life than he does on TV.

The entertainment didn't end there as at the last minute it was announced that Kane was going to be making the match between CM Punk and Chavo Guerrero a triple threat.

The fans were fully behind CM Punk, but ECW champion Kane's size and experience made the difference as he registered a double Chokeslam on both his foes to secure the victory.

This led us to our main event and while most fans know that titles very rarely change hands on a house show, I was just glad to be able to see my two favourite Smackdown guys one on one.

And the Rated R Superstar and The Undertaker didn't fail to disappoint as they put on a really good match to send the Birmingham faithful and the travelling few home happy with a victory for the man from Death Valley.

For my first Smackdown live show for some time I was very happy with what I witnessed.

On this tour for once it seems like the Smackdown crew had the star power with Undertaker, Edge, Batista, Big Show, Kane, Matt Hardy and MVP all making the trip over to our shores - while Raw stars John Cena and Mr Kennedy stayed in the States.

House shows are great family entertainment and if you can't get to a TV taping are very much worth the admission. I will probably check out Smackdown again when the WWE come back in the Autumn.
